Papamoa might not be the first place you'd expect to find a thriving padel scene. But The Padel Club NZ has built exactly that — four courts and a community that's grown through word of mouth, WhatsApp groups, and the simple fact that padel is a hard sport to play just once.
The Setup
Four outdoor courts in Papamoa serve the wider Bay of Plenty region. The coastal location means generally good weather for outdoor play, with the Tauranga area's mild climate extending the outdoor season well into autumn and starting early in spring.
Community First
What sets Papamoa apart is the community approach. WhatsApp groups organised by playing level make it easy for players to find games. Beginners can connect with other beginners without feeling intimidated by advanced players, while competitive players can organise higher-level matches.
Social mixers run regularly, deliberately mixing skill levels so experienced players can introduce newcomers to the tactical side of the game. It's a model that builds the player base from the ground up.
Growing the Bay
For the Bay of Plenty, having a dedicated padel facility matters. The nearest alternatives are in Auckland or Hamilton, both over an hour away. Local access means local players can develop their game through regular play rather than occasional road trips.
The club has plans to expand programming, including coaching, junior development, and competitive leagues. For a sport that barely existed in the region two years ago, the trajectory is encouraging.
